A single ...

One Little Word
Inspired by Ali Edwards

A single word can be a powerful thing. It can be the ripple in the pond that changes everything. It can be sharp and biting or rich and soft and slow. From my own personal experience, it can be a catalyst for enriching your life.

In 2006, I began a tradition of choosing one word for myself each January — a word that I can focus on, mediate on, and reflect upon as I go about my daily life. My words have included play, peace, vitality, nurture, and story. These words have each become a part of my life in one way or another. They’ve been imbedded into who I am, and into who I’m becoming. They’ve been what I’ve needed (and didn’t know I needed). They’ve helped me to breathe deeper, to see clearer, and to grow.

Here is a really nice free download “Word of the Year Discovery Tool” from blogger Christine Kane. Its a worksheet to help you think through your word and then telling the story of your word. Great action tool.

I’m going to start now, how about you? (:

Antwerp is said to be the fashion capital of Belgium…but instead of fashionistas, I spot these gems everywhere. You can even buy diamonds there and an Antwerpen cut for diamonds is one of the most prestigious.

Apart from gems, we spotted many Jews as well. Jews in their traditional clothing and Kippah or Jewish hat. They also have long sidelocks - “There are other prohibitions concerning the shaving of hair so that an orthodox (straight belief) or Torah true Jew wears long sideburns known as Payot Harosh or, in Yiddish, Payes.”

They will usually be clad in black, because “black clothes are also known to Jews as a symbolic expression divrai yirah shomayim, which means “fearing heaven”. To some Jews life is very serious and the Jew is always conscious of his relationship to G’d. Therefore black is worn so as to avoid frivolity and also place distance between the wearer and everyone else.”

We know so little about them. Yet they remain one of the wealthiest religions.

Brussels is known for its comic strip art on walls all around Brussels. So we went on a hunting spree! But we had no map..so we relied on my Nokia E71’s Ovi Maps and GPS =D

We walked quite long..but we still missed out a few.

This is one of the comic characters, just that he is a statue, not painted! We took a while to find him.

An unexpected stopover

When we wanted to get to Brussels, we tried to get City Night Line straight there. But due to the mismanagement of time and the uncooperative system, we ended up changing a few regional trains.

Nevertheless, the unexpected stopover at Liege allowed me to see its new train station. A beauty! Looks kinda similar to Valencia’s Arts and Science Museum though.

HWR International Day

T’was the day we brought out Singapore’s Yeo’s soya drink, Laksa and Hainanese paste, along with magnificent shots of the Singapore’s skyline and all the cute cartography of “fines” we find pasted all over Singapore.

This event was also a food galore! You get to sample food from different countries - Korean noodles (i dont know the name of this super tasty dish!), Turkish delights, Japanese sushi, Sangria from Spain, Dutch cheese and stroopwafels, Oreos from US, amongst many.

One of the rare chances that a few of us gather together to have dinner! This was an impromptu decision to have spargel and carbonara. Yes, how can they co-exist when both are main dishes?!

It’s our first time having spargel and knew zilch about how to cook it and how it was served. Nevertheless, the carbonara (with spinach linguine) was delicious and made up for the spargel. Of course, it was great having dinner with an awesome helper and a “michelin 3 stars chef”!

Sachsenhausen..

As chilling as Munich’s Dachau concentration camp.
It was an on-the-spur-of-the-moment decision to visit Bauhaus Archives w Gunil and Soo. The place is really lovely and its difficult to believe that many of the modern buildings built nowadays have been conceptualised from as early as 1900s…Many of the furniture that we use today (and found in Ikea) have been created in 1920s by Bauhaus architects. No wonder the Bauhaus is so famous..Imagine a futuristic glass building in 1929. This is exactly what they built for the German Pavilion in Barcelona.

We then roamed Tiergarten and ended up at the Solar Bar. It is housed in one of the few tall building in Berlin so you can imagine the view we had of Berlin from the top. The cocktails were expensive though, so we settled for the classic beer. This brand is very tasty!

Lovely day with great company (:

Bode Museum

Since its a Thursday where National Museums are free 4 hours before the closing time, I visited Bode Museum (:

The museum was designed by architect Ernst von Ihne and completed in 1904. Originally called the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum after Emperor Frederick III, the museum was renamed in honour of its first curator, Wilhelm von Bode, in 1956.

In order to achieve the appearance of a building rising from water the architect arranged the three-winged building around several interior courtyards so that the exterior facades immediately bordered the banks of the river Spree. A dominating dome and two opulent staircases lend the building a stately air which is underlined further by the decorative elements such as the monumental pilasters, demi-columns and window surrounds.
